Company description
Cheesecake Energy develops energy storage systems for renewable energy.
Cheesecake Energy Ltd. (CEL) is developing and selling a medium-scale (150kW), medium-duration (5hrs - 12hrs of discharge time) energy storage system. The system stores energy in the combined forms of pressurised air (34%) and heat (66%). The system uses modified ex-service truck engines to become compressor/expander machines and uses its own unique valve-actuation system to enable the same machine to serve as compressor (for charging) and as expander (for discharging). The system includes significant amounts of natural inertia but also has the capability to include more based on the findings from the SHyKESS research programme.
Project impact
Impacts are only just beginning but CEL has secured a contract with Colchester Amphora to support a business part and it will account for several millions of pounds of cost saving on this site alone. It is being explored seriously for supporting EV charging stations.
Won contracts worth £1m
CEL has developed a design for low-cost energy storage and has filed ten patent applications around the technology, while building a team of 18 people and establishing a demonstrator system. CEL has been awarded funding as part of the UK Government's BEIS Longer Duration Energy Storage Demonstration (LODES) competition. The funding will accelerate development and commercialisation of CEL's eTanker system. CEL raised £1.1M in Seed funding to fuel the development of its manufacturing capabilities and support product development of its eTanker storage system. The round was led by Imperial College Innovation Fund alongside prominent investors including Perivoli Innovations, and other angel investors.

Projects
EVT-M3 - Manufacturing the transition to zero emission fleets
1 Aug 2021 to 31 Mar 2022
Project EVT-M3 focuses on making affordable and climate-friendly energy storage systems to support EV charging. Such energy storage systems are needed to smooth-out the flows of power from (and to) the electricity grid so that very expensive grid upgrades can be avoided and so that maximum use can be made of locally-generated renewable energy from wind tu...
Isobarix: Unlocking constant-pressure gas storage
1 Jul 2021 to 31 Aug 2022
Those familiar with TV weather forecasts will likely have heard the term "Isobar", which is a contour of constant pressure. Isobarix is all about storing energy gases in tanks at constant pressure irrespective of how full/empty the tank is. The gases of most interest in this project are (i) compressed air, (ii) pressurised hydrogen and (iii) compressed na...
Magneto Poppets
1 Nov 2020 to 30 Apr 2021
Some supercars like the _Koenigsegg Gemera_ exploit controlled valve actuation systems to enable the engine to open its valves at different times during the engine cycle (or not at all) depending on the running condition. In effect, the _Magneto-Poppets_ project aims to achieve what the Koenigsegg cars achieve -- at about one hundredth of the cost and wit...
EV Tanker - Deploying thermal and compressed air energy storage for electric vehicle charging
1 Oct 2020 to 30 Jun 2021
Electrification of transport is the single greatest opportunity to cause dramatic reductions in carbon emissions and air quality concerns from road usage. Achieving these high-priority aims calls for rapid and widespread adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) across the UK. As more people switch to EVs, cities will need to think how to provide charge to all ...
MoCha - TheMES: Motorway Charging using Thermo-Mechanical Energy Storage
1 Dec 2019 to 31 Oct 2022
The future of road transport is electric. The electric vehicle (EV) revolution has been extraordinarily rapid and every major vehicle manufacturer now has plans in place to replace conventional vehicles with EVs. This will make major contributions to improving air quality and will enable a more digitally-integrated transport system. Charging infrastructur...
MoCha - TheMES: Motorway Charging using Thermo-Mechanical Energy Storage
1 Sep 2019 to 31 Oct 2019
TITLE: MoCha TheMES: Motorway Charging using advanced Thermo-Mechanical Energy Storage. The future of road transport is electric. For cars, this has been evident for over two years. Today it is fairly broadly accepted that this is also true for all vehicles ranging from motorcycles to HGVs. The electric vehicle (EV) revolution has been extraordinarily rap...
